Lord Iliffe bought Mariquita in 1925 together with his solicitor, Mr Alan E Messer. He passed on or disposed of his half share to Mr Messer in 1934. Alan Messer kept her until after the war when she became a houseboat in a mud berth before rediscovery in the late 1990s by Albert Oberist, the Fife fanatic who wished to resurrect and restore her. At the time, she was registered in the name of Peter Davies, who introduced the 3rd Lord to his future wife on Waterloo Station in 1964. Peter’s involvement was because he was the executor of the executor of Alan Messer and no one had done any paperwork since the war!!
