1877-1960. Edward Iliffe was an eminent newspaper and magazine publisher. His father (d. 1917) founded The Cyclist (1890) and Autocar (1895). Edward bought the magazine Yachting World in 1920, and in partnership with William Berry (Lord Camrose) owned the Daily Telegraph from 1929 to 1939.

In 1930, before he was elected into the Squadron, as Edward Mauger, he bought the three masted gaff schooner Xarifa from Edward Singer of the US sewing machine family.  The yacht had been built by J Samuel White in Cowes in 1926.  He sold her to Camper & Nicholson in 1934 and, two years later, she was bought by the Belgian Baron Louis Emplain and renamed L'Oiseau Blanc.  There then followed a series of other owners and name changes and, once more named Xarifa, she has now (2016) just completed a major restoration and is sailing again.
