Erminia
was a topsail schooner built by William Camper in Gosport in 1849. She had five RYS owners and remained on the Squadron list until 1884.
Her first owner, the 1st Earl of Ellesmere (1823-56), said of her “for the purposes for which I have applied her, of long cruises with safety and such comfort as heavy weather permits at sea, I doubt whether she has any superior”.
In 1868, ‘Erminia’ was lengthened by ten feet, increasing her tonnage from 150 to 250, and the attached picture probably shows her in her enlarged state.
It is taken from a painting hanging in the Ladies' Dining Room.
