The Pearl was a 113 ton cutter built by Philip Sainty at Wivenhoe for the Marquess of Anglesey, a founder member of the Club, who lived in the Castle as Captain of Cowes Castle.  On his death in 1854 the Castle was decommissioned.

The Marquess was unable to attend the first meeting of The Yacht Club in 1815 as he was taking part in the Battle of Waterloo, where he lost a leg, which was buried on the battlefield.

Pearl was a famous racing yacht, which took part in matches with yachts belonging to other members, such as the Weld brothers.  Her fine performance encouraged the Navy to order a twenty gun sloop on the same lines and she took part in a comparison of six Squadron yachts organised by the Superintendent of the School of Naval Architecture in Portsmouth Dockyard in 1827.

The painting copied below is hung in the Commodore's Bedroom.

Pearl was built by a specialist in smugglers' boats who was released from prison at Anglesey's request.
