As the Earl of Uxbridge, he was a founder member of The Yacht Club.
The painting on the right below shows him in the cavalry uniform he wore at Waterloo (before he lost his leg) while still Uxbridge.
The false leg he wore is still preserved at the family seat overlooking the Menai Straits
He was a great sportsman and, almost to the end of his life, it was his habit to shoot grouse from the back of a barrel-bellied pony
He was in every way typical of his generation - hard living, hard riding and hard swearing, yet he was kind-hearted and extremely hospitable His friends could always dine at Uxbridge House, his London residence, simply by writing their names on a slate kept in the hall for that purpose. He did, though, hold in contempt the spongers and professional diners-out who he used to say "went cruising for a cutlet".
