Excerpt from a book written by Captain Wingfield:

The next boat I owned was a Westerly 23-footer.  I called her ‘Alagra’, a name constructed by my friend Hooky Walker from the Latin ala, a wing, and agra, a field.  Hoping to make a good showing in the Junior Offshore Group, which I joined with John Illingworth as my proposer, I bought an extra large Genoa.  This did not have the intended effect.  All that happened was that the mast bent like a fishing rod and the boat went no faster.  I had some enjoyable cross-Channel cruises but I was quite glad to sell her at the end of the season for about what I had paid for her.
