Aries
was taken up for war service in September 1914 and was one of the first yachts to join the improvised Yacht Patrol. Her owner, although aged 53 at the time, served with her for a year in the North Sea until he was transferred to another appointment.
The yacht served in the Tyne area in 1914 and in the Dover and Downs area in 1915.
She was armed with two 3-pounders.
She was sunk by a mine in October 1915 while on patrol in the vicinity of the South Goodwin lightship, with the loss of 5 officers and 17 men.
