Admiral Sir William Acland (1847-1924) was Admiral Superintendent of the Gibraltar Dockyard from 1902 to 1904, Deputy Lieutenant of Devon, and a Justice of the Peace for Oxfordshire and Devon. His wife Emily was a daughter of W.H.Smith MP, Cabinet Minister and owner of the well-known chain of station bookstalls.
