Fourteen Redwings were built in 1896, and another ten were added in 1901.  They were replaced in 1938 by a larger boat built at Camper & Nicholson's under the supervision of John Nicholson, the son of Charles E Nicholson.

This class has been much favoured by Squadron members, and Redstart was a consistent winner for over a decade in the hands of the Janson family.
