Excerpt from a book written by Captain Wingfield:
The best yacht I ever owned was a South Coast One Design called Mariota. She was a 24-footcruiser-racer with comfortable accommodation. For two seasons I raced in the SCOD class which was based on Cowes, as well as crossing the Channel many times. We usually finished somewhere in the middle of the class but on one occasion we won. A regular crew at that time was Hugh Somerville, yachting correspondent for the Sunday Times. One day he suggested that we should change places. He would steer and I would go on the foredeck. I willingly agreed and wished him good luck, although I added that we were too slow to win. Surprisingly we did win. “Nothing wrong with this boat, Mervyn” he said, “you just don’t have the touch.” He was quite right. Although I am a competent skipper of a cruising yacht, I know I lack that certain flair which wins races. I think it is something you are born with, like horsemanship. Perhaps it is an extra sensitivity in the hands, as riding and sailing ability often go together.
