Kalan was requisitioned in September 1939 and was employed as an anti-submarine vessel.  In April 1940 she was sent to the Ayshire Dockyard at Irvine for conversion to an anti-submarine instructional craft which included the fitting of the Type 134 Asdic set.  She served in this capacity for the rest of the war.

In July 1944 she was allocated to Training Captain, Western Approaches for training duties at Larne.
