Built in the USA for Paul Hammond in 1928, Nina won both the Transatlantic and the Fastnet races that year.

She was a staysail schooner, a rig previously unknown in the UK and was, effectively, a cutter with a small main and a large fore triangle, and was probably easier to sail than a cutter because her sails were split up into so many small pieces.

Her short ends were the result of the American Ocean Racing Rules; otherwise it is certain she would have had longer overhangs fore and aft, thus allowing a shorter bowsprit, easier reefing of the main, and greater stability, steadiness and speed in a seaway.
