Based at Le Havre until the outbreak of war, Eros was a yacht of great elegance and luxury. She was requisitioned by the French Navy as an auxiliary vessel, armed with a 100 mm gun, and served as an escort for troop ships and submarines in the Mediterranean until November 1942 when she was captured by the Germans at Toulon. She was modified and armed as a submarine hunter (U-Jäger 2216), and was sunk by an allied torpedo on the night of 13-14 September 1944 near La Spezia. Her wreck is still visited by divers. She was painted at Le Havre by the English artist Eric Ravilious in March 1939 (Yellow Funnel, Grundy Art Gallery, Blackpool).
