Hersilia was taken up for war service in September 1914, armed with one 12-pounder, and became part of the Auxiliary Patrol in the Stornoway area in 1914 and 1915.

In January 1916 she was caught in a bad storm while hunting a U-Boat and was wrecked on North Rona.
