Having beaten the American yacht
Sappho
at Cowes and
Dauntless
in American waters,
Cambria
seemed to be destined to do well as the first yacht to attempt to win back the America's Cup. She was, however, soundly defeated by the NYYC defender, and was then beaten by an improved
Sappho
.
After that she lived out a long career as a coaster among the Antilles (or as a West African trader in a different book of reference).
The lithograph on the right shows her winning the Anglo-American Yacht Race around the Isle of Wight on 25 August 1868. At the time she was owned by Mr James Ashbury, not a Squadron member.
The image below shows her crossing the Atlantic to take part in the America's Cup series.
