Rob Brown has sailed and had an interest in boats and the sea since childhood, originally sailing on the Firth of Forth from the Royal Forth Yacht Club where he became a regular Dragon Crew and was foredeck on the winner and runner up in the Edinburgh Cup in 1969 and 1970.

When the fleet of International One Designs migrated from the Solent to the Forth he owned and campaigned Whiffenpoof for several years with some success and was World Secretary of the Class.
 
In the early 1980s he transferred his affections back to the Dragon Class as an owner and campaigned several Sabbaticals, winning the Edinburgh Cup, the Irish and French Dragon Nationals and several Regional events.  During this time he was Chairman of the British Dragon Association.

After retiring in 2005 as an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon and Head of Surgery at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary Trust he turned to Crusing in a Jeanneau 49 in the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Ionian.

Upon election to the RYS in 2009 he was inspired and encouraged to become involved in Race Management and was thrown in at the deep end as timekeeper for Cowes Week on three occasions and has since become an National Race Officer.
