Joseph Nias entered the navy in 1807 and took part in battles against Napoleon in the Mediterranean until 1815. He continued in active service after the peace, and in January 1818 was appointed to an expedition to the Arctic under the command of Sir John Ross. He made a second trip to the Arctic in 1821, which lasted for two years. In 1826, Nias was sent to the Mediterranean under the command of Sir Edward Codrington, and after the battle of Navarino he was promoted to the rank of Commander. He later served in the First Opium War (1839-42) in China, after which he returned permanently to Britain.
