Admiral Sir Edward Codrington KCB

In October 1827 Admiral Codrington commanded the combined British, French and Russian fleets at the battle of Navarino, the last major naval battle fought entirely by sailing ships. The battle destroyed the Ottoman fleet and marked a turning point in the Greek War of Independence. Codrington remains a hero in Greece to this day, with streets named after him and a memorial in the main square of the town of Pylos, overlooking Navarino Bay (see photo below).
