Best known as Nelson's friend and as the Flag Captain of Victory at Trafalgar, Thomas Hardy had previously fought at the Battle of St Vincent in 1797 and had first come to Nelson's notice in 1798 when he cut out Mutine, 38, at Santa Cruz.  He then commanded Mutine at the Battle of the Nile.  Thereafter, until Nelson's death at Trafalgar, he was his Flag Captain in Vanguard, 74, Foudroyant, 74, San Josef, 110, St George, 98, Amphion, 32, and finally Victory, 100.

He was elected into the Squadron in 1816, at the head of the first list of Naval Members, while he was commanding the Royal Yacht Princess Augusta, formerly the Dutch Royal Yacht.

Having been First Sea Lord from 1830 to 1834, he was appointed Governor of Greenwich Hospital, and the painting opposite shows him at that time.

He had three daughters, but no male offspring, so the Baronetcy died with him in 1839.
