Peter Thornycroft was a naval architect, who worked at the Thornycroft Company (the family firm, based at Woolston) and for a time at Vosper Ltd in Portsmouth.
Although he was in the reserved occupation of shipbuilding in World War II, he helped in 1944 and 1945 to restore the channel ports to use after the damage caused by the retreating Germans.
He formed Keith Nelson Boatbuilders in 1955, the year he was elected to the Royal Yacht Squadron.
His father was Tom Thornycroft, sculptor and boat designer, and his grandfather was John Isaac Thornycroft, the founder of the family shipbuilding company. His son Hamo Thornycroft is a well-known yachting photographer in Cowes.
