Admiral Clement Greatorex, C.B., M.V.O. (7 January, 1869 – 21 March, 1937).
His surname was pronounced "Greatrakes".
Early Life and Career
Greatorex was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 14 June 1889,and appointed to the special service vessel Sphinx on 25 February 1890.
He was lent to command the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 87 on 21 July 1892 for manoeuvres.
Greatorex was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June 1901 and to Captain on 31 December 1905.
In January 1906, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Eclipse. He was relieved by William F. Slayter on 24 March 1908.
He was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Natal on 27 June, 1911.
Great War
Greatorex was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Civil Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 1 January 1916.
Greatorex was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 27 April 1917. On 8 October 1917 he was appointed Senior Naval Officer in the Shetlands. He took up the appointment on 18 October.
Post War
Greatorex was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 2 May 1922, vice Bruce, and was placed on the Retired List on 3 May 1922. He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 8 November 1926.
He died at the age of 68 on board Tamaroa on his way back to England after a brief holiday in New Zealand. He was buried at sea.
