In about 1887 he was the Flag Lieutenant to Vice Admiral Sir Edward Inglefield (RYS 1884-1894) who was flying his Flag in Bellerophon on the North American and West Indies Station.
In 1894 he was a Commander in HMS Pelican.
As a Captain, he took over command of the cruiser Sappho in 1898.
He was appointed MVO 4th Class on 2 May 1902.
He was the Captain of HMS Minerva until October 1902.
