Admiral John Bridges Eustace (20 January 1861 – 9 August 1947)


Eustace was promoted to Lieutenant with seniority of 21 July 1883.

On 12 December 1895, Eustace was appointed to the new battleship Majestic.

He was promoted to Commander on 30 June 1896 and then to Captain on 30 June 1903.

In November 1904, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Fox.

On 1 March, 1910, Eustace was appointed to commission the new dreadnought Vanguard.

Eustace was promoted to Rear Admiral on 3 June 1913.

On 25 January 1916, the Commander-in-Chief, Grand Fleet, Admiral Sir John R. Jellicoe, wrote to the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Henry B. Jackson:

I really do not think that Eustace is the right man for the 3rd BS [Third Battle Squadron] under present conditions. His sea experience is small & none since 1911. … I am sorry for Eustace but I really don't think he should come.

He was promoted to the rank of Vice Admiral on 25 August 1918, and was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 September.  He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 6 April 1922.
