Algernon Maudslay was one of two RYS members who sailed in the first yachting Olympics in 1900 and he won two Gold Medals.
He was the crew of the yacht Scotia, and it is possible his two Gold Medals are a unique achievement as it would be impossible to do that in the current Olympic format.
The records for these Games are scant. The Yachting would appear to have been fairly shambolic with all classes starting together which would be interesting in itself. It was not helped by light winds blowing across the river contrary to the prevailing direction. Needless to say there were collisions resulting in numerous disqualifications. However , Scotia survived to win the Open Class then following up with a win in the ½ Ton Class.
It is not clear which member of the crew was the helmsman with Maudslay seemingly the helmsman if an average is taken of the reports. The crew was Maudslay, John Gretton Jnr, Linton Hope, designer, and Lord(?) Lorne Campbell Currie who is named as helmsman in some reports. Maudslay at 25 was the youngest.
Gretton was an RYS member. He was an MP and as such the only serving MP to have won Gold let alone two in one Games. (Coe had given up running when elected an MP). He was created Baron Gretton in 1944.
Maudslay was a member of RTYC, RLYC and RYS. He was Hon Treasurer of the YRA 1927-1948 and involved with the SVYC. By reports, he was a skilled Solent helmsman although there are no known records or photographs
He was the uncle of the mother of Ian Mackinnon, RYS member 1975 to date.
