Born on 8 June 1877, he became a Lieutenant on 15 July 1891.

He commanded the 30 knot B-Class Torpedo Boat Destroyer HMS Orwell from 22 December 1902 and, on 30 January 1903, was conducting night operations off Corfu when he was in collision with the cruiser Pioneer and had his bows cut off with the loss of 15 men.

Still as a Lieutenant, he commanded another 30 knot Torpedo Boat Destroyer, the D-Class HMS Angler from 15 January 1906.

Now as a Commander, he commanded the 14th Kite Balloon Section of the RNAS during the Mesopotamia operations, and provided a spotting service for the warships and for soldiers ashore during action in the Tigris from December 1916 to March 1917, leading to the capture of Baghdad.
