Admiral Sir Walter Cowan KCB DSO MVO (1871-1956)
joined the Navy at age 13, fought at Omdurman (1898), then in the Boer War as Kitchener’s aide-de-camp, and throughout World War I. He retired from the Navy with the rank of Admiral in 1931. When war was declared in 1939 he insisted on fighting again, and served with the Commandos until he was captured in the Western Desert attacking an Italian tank with his revolver. Repatriated by the Italians as too old for combat, he returned to the front line with the Commandos in the islands off Dalmatia. In 1944, at the age of seventy-three, he was awarded a bar to the DSO which he had won in 1898.
