Surgeon and Rear-Admiral ETS RUDD CB, CBE, BA, MB, BCH, BAO, FRCSED, RN (Ret) Surgeon Rear-Admiral E T S Rudd, formerly medical officer in charge of the Royal Navy Hospital, Haslar, died on 21 May. He was 75.
Eric Thomas Sutherland Rudd was born 19 February 1902 and graduated in medicine at Trinity College, Dublin, in 1925. Later that year he joined the Royal Navy and served in a number of ships, including the battleships Royal Sovereign and Queen Elizabeth. In 1931 he was promoted to surgeon lieutenant-commander and went to the Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar, as specialist in ENT diseases. After his promoted to surgeon commander he was appointed as surgical specialist to the hospital ship Maine in the Mediterranean, serving in her until May 1939, during which period the ship dealt with many refugees from the Spanish Civil War. He then became surgical specialist to the Royal Naval Hospital at Portland. In November 1941 he again went to sea, this time in HMS Warspite as squadron medical officer, and took part in the invasions of Sicily and Italy. Later he served at the Royal Naval Hospital, Chatham, where he dealt with large numbers of casualties and helped with the rehabilitation of the badly wounded. After the war he was surgical specialist in HMS Vanguard for the Royal Tour of South Africa.
Promoted surgeon captain in December 1946, he was appointed CBE in 1954 and made honorary surgeon to the Queen in 1955. Later that year he became surgeon rear-admiral and was medical officer in charge of Haslar Hospital until 1958, when he was appointed CB and retired after 32 year's service. Until 1965 he was house governor of King Edward VII Convalescent Home for Officers at Osborne, where he was popular, respected and very happy. He was elected a full member of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. Among his recreations he enjoyed shooting, fishing and golf, and he also played a good hand of bridge.
In 1930 he married Enid, the daughter of a captain RN. She died in 1968 and they are survived by their son and daughter.
