David Balme was born in 1920 and attended the Royal Naval College Dartmouth from 1933 to 1938. In May 1940, while serving as a navigating officer in HMS Bulldog he was sent to board a damaged German U-boat and captured a working Enigma machine, which was to prove crucial to the work of code breakers at Bletchley Park. After the war he joined the family wool-broking firm in London. He transferred from Member to Honorary Member in 2014 when the Rules changed to allow this for members over the age of 90.
