Andrew Napier was the great-great-grandson of Robert Napier of West Shandon (1791-1876) who was a shipbuilder and marine engineer on the Clyde.  He built at least nine yachts for Assheton Smith between 1830 and 1851.  Assheton Smith resigned from the Squadron in about 1827 as steam yachts were frowned upon.

Andrew Napier was a Major in the Coldstream Guards; his sailing interest lay in long-distance cruising and, to do this, he owned two MFV-type yachts - Golden Miller and Skomer.
