Charles John Colville was born on 23 November 1818.  He was educated at Harrow and succeeded to his title in 1849.

He was Lord Chamberlain to the Princess of Wales from 1873 and stayed with her when she became Queen Alexandra in 1901 until he died in 1903.

His wife, the Hon Cecile Catherine Mary Carrington died in the same year.

Their second son, Sir Stanley Cecil James Colville was appointed First Lieutenant of HM Yacht Victoria and Albert II in 1890.
