He was a brilliant orator, far-seeing statesman, and a most able lawyer and judge.  He was twice Attorney-General, and became Lord Chief Justice of England in 1859.

He was twice offered a peerage, but declined both.  However, he accepted the Grand Cross of the Bath.

He died in 1880 aged 78.

The title remains in abeyance.
