Henry Berkeley Portman was the third son of the 2nd Viscount, (also Henry Berkeley) but the elder two boys predeceased their father who died in 1919 at the age of 90.

The 3rd Viscount was born on 16 February 1860 and died on 18 January 1923, so he only held the title for four years.

His younger brothers, in their turn, became the 4th, 6th and 7th Viscounts.
