Colonel McCalmont and his nephew, Harry McCalmont (RYS Member 1894-1902), were heirs to a substantial City fortune and both owned important yachts. Colonel Barklie had the 160 ton gaff rigged ketch, Madeline and then another Madeline, a 100 ton steam yacht. His nephew Harry commissioned the 1,600 ton Giralda, which was subsequently acquired by Spain as a Royal Yacht for King Alfonso XIII, and later the Tarantula, a 120 ton 150 feet long triple shaft 9 screw yacht, resembling a pre-First World War torpedo boat. This was one of the first yachts ever built to have steam turbines and she was capable of 25 knots, later serving in the First World War with the Canadian Navy.
Colonel Barklie took the 380 ton schooner Margharita on behalf of its owner, Major George Cecil Whitaker, (the third of the three large schooners built by Major Whitaker, who built an enormous fortune in the Marsala trade) to the Kiel Regatta in 1913, winning six out of seven races and beating the Kaiser's Meteor III. The Kaiser's brother, Prince Henry of Prussia, was a welcome and appreciated guest on board Margharita but it is reported that her crew were made thoroughly unwelcome ashore by German naval ratings.
Colonel Barklie commanded the Fifth Battalion the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in the Boer War and served on the General Staff from 1915. He also earned his Master's ticket, which was an unusual achievement for a Squadron Member in those days.
Colonel Barklie's great grandson, Julian Lakin,was elected as a Member in 2013 but sadly died in 2016.
