Colonel Sir James Digby Legard was born on 12 July 1846.  He was the son of Captain James Anlaby Legard and Katherine Cayley.  He married Julia Helen Arkwright, daughter of Alfred Arkwright, on 30 August 1877. He died on 16 September 1935 at age 89.

He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Royal Artillery.  He fought in the Zulu War in 1879, where he was mentioned in despatches. He was invested as a Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.).  He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for the East Riding, Yorkshire.  He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for the North Riding, Yorkshire. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of the North Riding, Yorkshire. He was Colonel of the Yorkshire Royal Field Artillery.  He was Colonel of the North Riding Volunteer Regiment. He was Colonel of the East Yorkshire Infantry Volunteer Brigade.
