He was born in Ryde, Isle Of Wight, on 14 March 1872 to Edward Salvin Bowlby and Maria Rimington

Educated at Eton, he then graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1893.

He married Catherine Mary Bond 0n 24 October 1903 and they had 4 children.

He became a JP for Hertfordshire, and was the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire in 1908.

He lived at Gilston Park, Harlow, Hertfordshire, and  at Knoydart, Inverness-shire, Scotland.

He died on 13 Aug 1932 at the age of 60.
