Lord Birkenhead as F.E.Smith made his name as a successful barrister and member of Parliament. By the time of his election as a member he was Lord Chancellor and had made many enemies, so there was concern that he might be blackballed. Accordingly his proposer was the Commodore and the seconder was Lord Albemarle. The Admiral, King George V, also took a personal interest
