Firstly as a Lieutenant Colonel, but from 27 April 1890 as a Colonel, Benson commanded the 17th Lancers for four years, after which he was placed on half pay on 10 January 1892.

His wife, Eleanor, was the widow of the 4th Viscount Gort and married Benson on 27 June 1908.  She died on 28 February 1933 at her home, East Cowes Castle, after a long illness.
