John Black Atkins (1871-1954), who wrote Further Memorials of the Royal Yacht Squadron (1939) was a newspaper correspondent in the Boer War, a colleague and friend of the young Winston Churchill, and London editor of the Manchester Guardian 1901-6. He was assistant editor of The Spectator from 1907 to 1926. His journalism was notable for its fluency, accuracy, vividly detailed descriptions and freedom from jingoism. He wrote several highly regarded books, including The Relief of Ladysmith (1900) and The Life of Sir William Howard Russell, the first special correspondent (1911). The autobiographical Incidents and Reflections (1947) describes his love of yachting, the Squadron, and his wide circle of friends. 'Yachtsmen deserve encouragement from every Government,' he wrote on the final page. 'They are the permanent substance of an emergency Navy.'
