Mr Blachford (pronounced Blashford) was a founding member of The Yacht Club.

Barrington Pope Blachford (1783-1816) was brought up at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight.  After Eton he served in the South Hants Militia and the Isle of Wight Yeomanry, attended the Duke of Wellington as an amateur in Portugal in 1808, and sat in Parliament (1807-12) as Member for Newtown, a seat controlled by his family.

He was among the founding subscribers of the Ryde Pier Company in1812,  a member of the National Society for the Promotion of Education, and a Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty(1814-16).

A high-spending gambler and horse-racing man, he owned a yacht, Sybil, and a thoroughbred stud.  His extravagance was funded by marriage to Lady Isabella Fitzroy, daughter of the 3rd Duke of Grafton.

Blachford died of tuberculosis at the age of 32, leaving Osborne House and an enormous wine cellar (3,000 bottles) to his widow.  She sold the wine when he died, and Osborne to Queen Victoria in 1845.
