Hugh was the brother of John Berners (RYS 1858-1885)

He (Hugh) was born in 1802, and joined the Navy at the age of 13.  He became Lieutenant in 1824, Commander in 1842 and finally Captain in 1860. He retired from active service in 1830 for personal reasons, so it's a bit surprising that he subsequently rose to senior rank.  There was at the time a scheme whereby retired Rear Admirals and above could be promoted on the Retired List, but it's doubtful if that privilege extended down to Lieutenants.

Hugh often rented a house on the Isle of Wight for the summer season.

He was the squire at Woolverstone Park, Ipswich from 1886, the year his brother died.

He died in 1891 at the age of 89.
