M E Hoare was the 6th of 9 children fathered by George Matthew Hoare (1779-1852) of Morden Lodge, Surrey, a partner in Hoare's Brewery.

He was listed as a Cornet in the 15th Hussars on 20 June 1841, and was promoted to Lieutenant on 13 August 1844.

It seems that he may have been wounded in India and needed looking after; the 1861 Census shows him as 42 years old, a "land and fund holder", and living with a nurse in Brighton.

He died unmarried at Brighton in 1862.
