There were a number of Honorary Naval Members (as they were then known) who had fought at the Battle of Trafalgar, but Captain Herringham is probably the only Member to have done so.  He was a Midshipman in HMS Colossus (74) (Captain (afterwards Sir James Nicoll) Morris) at the time, and was wounded during the Battle.

Born in 1790, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in 1810, and served in Java (frigate commanded by Captain Henry Lambert) during her long action with the USS Constitution in December 1812.  He then had four years in the frigate Tigris (Captain Robert Henderson) and was promoted to Commander in 1818.

After leaving the Squadron he continued to be promoted on the Retired List, and finally became a Vice Admiral in 1858.
He died on 27 December 1865.

The plaque shown here is on the wall of the Platform.
